Shopping at the Goodwill…..sign of the times
The Times Have Changed
Wifey and I have worked our asses off all our lives. Raised a litter of well fed kids and helped to groom a passel of grandkids. One of grandma Wifey’s delights has always been to take the grand younguns down to Walmart or Penney’s and buy play clothes for the nose pickers and for the teens, a few tasteless ensembles for school. Those days are over…….
Retired and trying to squeeze items like medications, Bengay, Fixodent and stool softeners into our tight budget has been difficult with increasing gas and food prices, not to mention HOOTER‘S hot wings going up. So, being shackled with an Obamanized economy, Wifey has had to cut corners. She started going to the local Goodwill store to buy stuff for the kids. At first, I threw a fit and was embarrassed when I found out, but it seems Wifey saw and chatted with several of our neighbors when she was there, not to mention the wife of the Walgreens manager. Seems all the Goodwill and Salvation Army centers are doing a booming business, now with so many people on hard times.
The way I look at it now, is that it’s like a recycle center. I dump all my leisure suits and bellbottoms into the bins behind the Goodwill and Wifey comes out the front with jeans for the grandkids. Sad to say, I did see a guy standing on the corner the other day holding a cardboard sign that read, ‘Will consider all offers to work for food’. What was sad, he was wearing my favorite plaid golf pants!

I’ve shopped Thrift or Consignment shops for YEARS.
It was one of the frugal moves that enabled me to survive after I was injured in two car accidents. I came to prefer it to regular stores, where they play games with prices. It also made me think hard about what stuff was worth. So I really want to pay more than 6 dollars for a sweater? Twenty for a coat? I don’t buy underwear or shoes at thrift stores, and I make sure I wash or clean each purchase…but I also keep my costs low.
A week ago, I found a real treasure in my new Neighborhood. A store chain called Savers. I was looking for interview clothes, and found two NEW Jones of New York suits…gorgeous…for less than 20 bucks a piece. They retail for over 300 bucks normally.
Why would I pay more than I need to?
I was raised wearing only brand name clothes. When I entered high school I really started loving the whole vintage look, and started going to thrift stores to put some crazy stuff together. I thought my dad especially would have a heart attack and I used to sneak the stuff into the house. I remember being totally embarrassed and leaving if I ever saw anyone I knew. Now I just love it, it’s like the thrill of the hunt! You never know what you can find there. The odd thing is that thrift store clothes fit me better and I seem to get more completes on the thrift finds than my more expensive clothes.
Goodwill has built some really nice stores in the last several years and I wouldn’t mind having a look inside. I got a VERY vintage chip and dip set at a consignment store which I still love. There are bargains to be had—you just have to search them out.
I absolutely love shopping at thrift stores!!! It’s actually one of my favorite past times. =)
I love going to thrift stores. I have a couple of favorites
my mom dug it too, still does. you can find great things, some practically new. I have bought some evening gowns at the consignment store here, beautiful things I wouldn’t have been able to buy without feeling guilt
and not once did I ever feel ashamed browsing through these stores. I was too busy trying to find wonderful stuff, and I often did
Desperate times call for desperate PANTS….oops, I mean measures!
We shop Good Will, Salvation Army, and the other three thrift shops here in town. We have bought nothing new for a long time and in return we do well, have what we need, and are able to pay off hospital bills that the VA Fee services refuses to pay.
Thank God for thift shops.
